This position requires office presence of a minimum of 5 days per week and is only located in the location(s) posted. No relocation is offered.
AT&T is seeking an experienced Archivist to join its Corporate Archives team at their largest branch in beautiful Somerset County, New Jersey, about 30 miles outside Manhattan. The successful candidate must be dedicated to outstanding customer service and committed to leveraging the heritage of one of the world’s most historic companies as it nears its 150th anniversary in 2026. Reporting to the San Antonio-based Corporate Archivist, the Archivist will practice many general archival functions at the Warren, NJ location of the AT&T Archives and History Center, and will become a subject matter expert on the history of AT&T.
Roles and Responsibilities (average percentage of time devoted in a 40-hour work week)
- Customer Service (45%)
Satisfies daily research requests from clients at internal AT&T business units (chiefly Global Marketing, Legal, Marketing & Growth, Finance, and HR) and external customers (scholars, authors, documentarians, and cultural heritage professionals).
- Project Teamwork (25%)
Partners with internal departments (such as Brand Advertising and Corporate Communications) on important cross-functional projects, alongside fellow Archives team members.
- Collections Management (15%)
Practices archival processing and digital curation and administers to professional standards AT&T’s largest archival collection (about 36,000 cu. ft. of paper-based documentation, photographs, A/V material, and over 12,000 three-dimensional artifacts and nearly 750 TB of digital objects).
- Collections Security (5%)
Helps ensure the preservation and physical safety of the collection at the 40,000-sq.-ft. Archives facility. Monitors environmental conditions and, in the absence of the local Archives Manager (NJ), reports problems to AT&T Global Workplace Services.
- IT Support (5%)
Collaborates with the San Antonio-based Digital Archivist on the maintenance of ArchivesSpace, the collection management system.
- Communications and Updates (2%)
Informs the Corporate Archivist of all activities through one-on-one conversations, and weekly written reports and Archives team calls.
- Intellectual Property Control (1%)
Serves as an agent of AT&T Intellectual Property by licensing historical assets to third-party users (for books, magazine articles, documentary films, websites, and exhibitions).
- Professional Development (1%)
Maintains a high level of expertise in archival best practices through continuing education. Also, takes AT&T HR Leadership & Development training.
- Other Dutiesas Assigned (1%)
Completes mandatory compliance courses among other things.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Holds a master’s degree in history, library & information science, or archives administration.
- Possesses at least three years of professional experience in a business or large institutional archives.
- Has exceptional oral and written communication skills, excellent organizational and time-management abilities, and strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Knows computer applications, especially Microsoft 365, and collections management systems.
Desired Qualifications:
- Understands archival theory and practice, and demonstrates this knowledge as a certified archivist.
- Recognizes the professional, ethical and legal issues surrounding collections acquisition and use, including intellectual property matters.
- Is familiar with emerging standards and best practices relevant to digital curation and preservation.
- Has expertise with ArchivesSpace.
- Is experienced with project management.
- Has some knowledge of telecommunications history.
Physical / Environmental Qualifications:
Must be able to:
- Alternate between sitting and standing for extended periods and walk frequently.
- Pick up, carry and move boxes and items up to 50 lbs.
- Ascend and descend ladders while carrying heavy objects.
- Tolerate regular exposure to dust.
- Travel to other company locations, particularly the AT&T Labs Museum in Middletown, NJ, in various weather conditions.
